It’s #ThrowBackThursday! Leamington's first government-owned post office opened to the public on May 27, 1911 and was erected on Talbot Street West near Fox Street. The structure was designed by David Ewart, a Canadian architect who served as Chief Dominion Architect from 1896 to 1914. As chief government architect, he was responsible for many of the federal buildings constructed in this period. Symmetrical neoclassical buildings modeled after classical Greek and Roman temples were thought to symbolize principles of justice and democracy, and thus the style was often used for federal buildings, like the post office. In 1993, the building was transformed into the Leamington Arts Centre (LAC), which is still in operation today.

Happy #TourismTuesday everyone!🌳 Have you walked through Garrison Garden yet? Located on Garrison Ave, this park has many beautiful scenic walkways including the Laybrinth path. A labyrinth is a symbol and a tool used for meditation and reflection. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. It is a symbol found in ancient cultures, religious mystical traditions and Native American culture. It is important to walk to labyrinth with an open heart and mind. To walk to labyrinth, it is suggested to first walk 3 times counter clockwise around the perimeter to unwind yourself. Then proceed and pause at the entrance way to allow yourself to be fully conscience of the act of stepping into the labyrinth. This is not a maze; there are no false trails. One path leads you to the center and back out. The entrance is also the exit. Many individuals will reflect on a personal problem, become enveloped in prayer or allow the labyrinth to guide their thoughts.

It’s #ThrowBackThursday! Remember those days when construction was an exciting event! It was a big day in Leamington in 1914 when they poured cement to pave the town’s main intersection. This photo of ‘The Four Corners’ was taken from the south-west corner and looks towards the north-east corner (where the Gingerbread House Restaurant is today). In 1914, the town paved Talbot Street between Erie Street and the easterly limit of the town. The next year the pavement was laid on Erie Street between Talbot Street and Concession 3 (Wilkinson Drive), and also on Victoria Avenue between Talbot Street East and Clark Street.

Tens of thousands of monarch butterflies are flying through Canada's most southern point and resting along the shore of Lake Erie as they migrate toward Mexico this month.
•
The shoreline of Point Pelee National Park acts as an ideal resting spot for the colourful butterflies as they prepare for the roughly 40 kilometre flight across Lake Erie and into Ohio, with only a few islands in between.
•
Andrew Laforet, the park's interpretation coordinator, says it's hard to predict exactly when they'll cross the lake, so now is a great time to go catch a glimpse of the monarchs.
•
In particular, he says rainy, windy days are good for capturing photos of them, as are early mornings and sunsets, when clusters of butterflies are most likely to appear.

This cactus is the rare Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus that can be found in Leamington, one of the very few cacti that are able to survive in Canada's weather. Due to Leamington's unique climate and rich soil it is able to survive. However, it is now in danger due to deforestation and from people removing and replanting it. In Point Pelee National Park, the cactus is carefully monitored and managed. Two factors have been identified as vital to the conservation of this species: maintaining suitable habitat in the park and stopping people from transplanting individual plants. Point Pelee has designed boardwalks that permit visitors to view species such as the eastern prickly pear cactus from a safe distance. Take a trip to Point Pelee National Park to learn more about this plant and how you can save it from going extinct. #TourismTuesday #ExperienceLeamington #OnThe42 #pointpelee🌵

If you visit Essex County at this time of year you may think that the leaves are starting to change into their autumn colours, but in fact they are just being decorated by Monarch butterflies.
Yesterday, a conservative count of over 10,000 Monarchs were counted at the Tip of Point Pelee NP alone. They roost in the trees in clusters while they await favourable weather conditions to cross Lake Erie and begin their journey to Mexico.

Here’s a special back to school #ThrowBackThursday!
Leamington’s first high school was located in Lewis Wigle’s home and opened January 7,1896. The ornate three-storey brick building was remodeled to provide four classrooms. The enrollment on the opening day was 56 students but this climbed to 105 by the end of the year. In 1908, four additional rooms and an office were built at the rear of the Wigle house (seen in this photo). By 1920, the enrollment had risen to 170 students and by 1922, it was found that the growing attendance could not be accommodated in the original structure. In September of 1922, the building was dismantled and a new Leamington High School (1923–1953) was constructed. Leamington District Secondary School (1953–2017) on Talbot Street West sits opposite of the old Wigle property.
